Use of Irony In "To Kill A Mockingbird" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The characters that are revealed in chapter twenty-four of To Kill a Mockingbird are almost all racists and hypocrites. With the exceptions of Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie, the characters in the story are written to use forms of irony in their statements. In particular, one lady known as Mrs. Meriwether uses irony in almost every sentence that comes out of her mouth. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses verbal and unexpected irony to develop the theme of the need to see things from another person's perspective in order to treat him/her properly. Verbal irony is the discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. In the scene when Scout is talking with the ladies, Stephanie Crawford brings up the topic of Scout's future occupation. Scout does not understand why the all of the ladies laugh when Stephanie says, "What are you going to be when you grow up Jean Louise? A lawyer like your father?" ......
